Life as a Manager

Another day in paradise

This has become my favorite phrase these past few weeks. I became the manager of a hotel with 68 rooms. This promotion occured on August 19th. Some days this is a good thing, some days I wish I would have said no. Here is the interesting part. Everyone I have met and talked to in coporate say that I am doing great. Yet no one has even visited to see what I'm doing. To make things more interesting I haven't even been officially trained. My previous bos taught me how to not cuss out a guest and how to do some of the paper work. The rest I have had to learn as I go. I even asked my regional to stop by and show me how to accomplish his schedule, yet he still hasn't shown up.
There is a new hotel going up down the street. I am waiting until they are underway and then I will put in my application. I will like working for a company that wants a General Manager not a all around manager.
I'm currently the Housekeeping manager, mantainance manager, front desk manager, assistant manager, sales manager and General Manager. And somehow I am suppose to be able to it all everyday. WHATEVER!!!
I just do what I can and hang the rest. Hey if they won't properly train me, why should I worry?

I agree. people who expect you to do the impossible with no direction are bound to be dissapointd, and if you really try to do what they "expect" of you, your just gonna wind up killing yourself.
its something your gonna see time and time again in any customer service industry. blame it on corporate. as long as the big wigs are making money, they dont care how their businesses are run, but once something goes wrong, your the one taking heat, no matter how much its their fault.

Wow, I don't think I have much to add to what Shawn said. They save money by having you do everything. Jon always talks about how in any organization people get promoted until they reach a position that they are incompetent at. So, remember that all the people who are "higher ranked" then you are probably doing jobs that they aren't good at (unless they have just be promoted). I hope I make sense. Peace!
